A home for your work after Vimeo On Demand
If you used Vimeo On Demand to host and share your films, music videos, or documentaries, you need a new home for them. Long Play was built for exactly that kind of work.
What Long Play offers
- No platform advertising — Long Play never inserts ads into your videos; any sponsorships in the work are the creator's own choice
- Calm, theatre-style player — no recommendations sidebar, no engagement clutter, nothing competing with the work
- Quality encoding — H.264 for broad compatibility across all devices; your originals are always preserved
- Privacy controls — public, private share (link only), or private per video; password protection for private sharing
- Permanent hosting — Long Play is built for the long term, not the next funding round
- You own it — creators retain full rights to everything they upload and can download their originals at any time
How it compares to Vimeo
| Vimeo (before shutdown) | Long Play | |
|---|---|---|
| Ads on your video | None | None |
| Privacy controls | Public / private / password | Public / private share (link only) / private / password |
| Player environment | Branded, configurable | Calm, minimal, fixed |
| Original file preservation | Yes | Yes |
| Per-video paid access | Yes (On Demand) | Yes — via your own payment platform (Creator plan) |
| Encoding quality | H.264 / H.265 | H.264 |
| Platform stability | Under new ownership, On Demand closing | Independent, long-term focus |
One difference worth noting: Vimeo On Demand processed payments directly on the platform. Long Play’s paid access works differently — you handle payment through whichever platform you choose (Gumroad, Paddle, Stripe, etc.) and Long Play manages access control via webhook. You keep the full revenue and the buyer relationship. Long Play takes no cut.
How to migrate your Vimeo On Demand library
- Get your videos into Long Play. Before you do anything, check whether you still have the original files on your computer or a hard drive. If you do, upload those directly — they will always be higher quality than anything Vimeo re-encoded. If not, here is how to get them out of Vimeo:
- Vimeo Pro and above — direct import. Use Long Play’s built-in Vimeo importer at /me/import/vimeo. Paste a Personal Access Token, select your videos, and Long Play streams them directly from Vimeo’s servers in the background. Nothing touches your computer. Requires a Vimeo Pro account or above — Free, Plus, and Basic do not support API downloads.
- Any Vimeo plan — manual download. In your Vimeo library, find each video, click the three-dot menu, and choose Download. Select Original if it appears — that is the file Vimeo received when you uploaded. If Original is not listed, your original was not preserved on Vimeo’s end; download the highest resolution available and check whether you still have the source file elsewhere. See Downloading your videos from Vimeo for step-by-step instructions.
- Set up each video in Long Play. Set your privacy level, fill in title and description. If you have existing buyers, set up your payment webhook and use the CSV buyer import on the access management page to grant them access.
- Point your audience to the new links. Update any links in newsletters, websites, or social profiles. If you’re running a launch discount to celebrate the move, create a promo code — viewers enter it at the video gate for free or discounted access without needing to go through your payment platform.
