Adding captions and subtitles
Captions make your work accessible to deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers, and open it up to audiences in other languages. Adding them takes a minute.
Go to your video's edit page, open the Captions & Audio tab, and find the Closed Captions section.
Supported formats
Long Play accepts caption files from all major professional workflows:
.srt- SubRip (most common, used everywhere).vtt- WebVTT (web standard).stl- EBU STL (European broadcast).scc- Scenarist Closed Captions (North American broadcast and DVD).ttml/.dfxp- Timed Text Markup Language (UK broadcast: BBC, ITV, Channel 4; Netflix and Amazon delivery specs).sbv- SubViewer (YouTube exports).itt- iTunes Timed Text (Apple TV and iTunes delivery)
All formats are converted to VTT automatically for playback. Your original file is always stored and available to download exactly as you uploaded it.
Upload one file per language and give it a label (e.g. "English", "Français"). Viewers choose which caption track to display in the player's remote panel.
Plan limits
- Free: up to 3 caption tracks per video, 10 MB max each
- Creator: up to 10 caption tracks per video, 25 MB max each
For a full breakdown of track limits across plans, see Caption and track limits.
Editing after upload
Once a track is uploaded, you can edit its cues, timecodes, and positioning directly in the browser - no need to re-upload a corrected file. See Editing caption tracks.
Auto-generated captions
Long Play can also transcribe your video's audio and generate a caption track automatically - no file needed. It runs entirely on Long Play's own servers. See Auto-generated captions for details.
Transcript page
Every public video with captions gets a transcript page at /browse/YOUR_VIDEO_ID/transcript. It renders the caption cues as plain readable text with clickable timecodes - useful for accessibility, for viewers who prefer to read, and for search engine indexing of your content.
Transcript search
In your library (/me/library), the search bar searches across transcripts from all your videos with uploaded captions. Type a word or phrase to find which video contains it and jump to the exact moment.
