Replacing a video file

You can replace the underlying file of any video you own - useful for fixing a colour grade, correcting audio, or updating a re-edit - without losing the video's URL, metadata, or play count.

Go to your video's edit page and click Replace video.

What changes on replace:

  • The video file itself
  • Thumbnail and poster (regenerated from the new file). Any thumbnails and posters you saved, including the originals, are removed, and you are asked to confirm first. See Choosing your thumbnail and poster
  • Duration (updated to match the replacement)

What stays the same:

  • Public URL and video ID
  • Title, description, keywords, and all metadata
  • Captions and audio tracks
  • Play counts and share links

A note on quota

A replacement counts as a new upload and adds to your quota like any fresh upload. The original duration isn't returned until you delete the video entirely - so if you're close to your limit, it's worth keeping that in mind.

If you run into any issues during the replace process, get in touch.
